Day 15 episode 2 - the waves just got steeper
Day 15 - the waves just got more turbulent
The passing of our Matriach.
It is with sadness in all our familys’ hearts that I post today. Margaret , our Matriach of the Jelley family flew like a beautiful butterfly to join her beloved husband
Bill (“ Boss Jel”.)
Recent news about a new diagnosis of a blood related cancer had shaken us all but Mum obviously more than perhaps even I had imagined. Following confirmation of the results from a recent investigation she took a sudden turn for the worse. Stabilised in hospital she was able to brighten up and settle under care . This care and support provided opportunity for my brother Keith and sister in law Jean to find the flights required to rush across from Melbourne. As a family we were able to spend most of Sunday sharing stories and memories. Her grand children Courtney and Brendan were able to talk to her via video links and be present to. With careful discussion and consideration, Margaret decided she did not want any active treatment. We were all able to discuss the options and be at peace with her decision. She returned to her own familiar “home” and bed at her “resthome” in KeriKeri and she knew she would soon peacefully join her husband “Bill”.
It has been an amazing experience to be able to be with Mum in such a time and yet she remained cognitively sound and engaged in debating such life’s decisions.
With the amazing support of my brother and Jean, the wonderful staff of the KeriKeri retirement Village and Mid-North Hospice she was settled and comforted in her own familiar environment.
Having returned to Auckland to continue my treatment , Renene and I went for a walk later on Monday afternoon and I felt the need to find and “hug” Kaitiaki ,
http://www.edmistontrust.org.nz/artworks/kaitiaki/ ,a sculpture we had found on previous walks.
Premonition? Who knows ? We returned to the Domain Cancer lodge where we have a soapstone sculpture in the stairwell we traverse daily. Renene and I were talking and touching this and talking about a “mother and her two sons” when a call came through.
Mum had passed on , in no pain or distress, on her 84th birthday . A life well lived .
I am truely grateful to Keith and Jean who stood faithfully by Mum’s side , provided me the space and time to return and not disrupt my treatment schedule she was so very insistent upon , and the ”peace in my heart “to do so.
I love these two people more than words can say.
Mom was very special to her boys. Together with Bill Jel, she provided a great upbringing to Grahame and Keith, teaching them the important lessons in life. We will deeply miss her.
