Day 12 -14 “Emotional up-heavel”
“Mar Jel “ matriarch and foundation stone of Jelley clan has in last week been diagnosed with a form of blood cancer called B Cell lymphoma. She has Developed a number of lumps and bumps around head , face and neck. Then took a sudden turn for worse and became acutely unwell and ended up in hospital nearby our home in KeriKeri. We arranged further care at main base hospital and after my radiation Friday rushed back to Whangarei to meet her there. Unfortunately transport delays meant her late arrival in Whangarei so we waited in Emergency department till 23h00 Friday and we have spent weekend in her company in the Hospital with opportunities to go out and “smell the roses” in Whangarei from time to time. News is not good so brother Keith and wife Jean managed a late evening flight from Melbourne and arrived in Whangarei around 08h00 this morning Sunday.
A very Emotional period of family decisions and overriding concern for Marjel’s welfare and comfort whilst always respecting her wishes .we were able to have quality time with Marjel and find peace with the world as it stands with us all. She rallied well enough to be able to have us “ in stitches” with some of her well known dry humour in between being totally exhausted. As a family together with Margaret a decision was made to allow her to return to her “home “ based in Kerikeri retirement Village and to provide comfort love and support in her own environment rather than be surrounded by strangers and noise in a busy hospital ward. She is now “home” settled in her own bed with her son Keith , daughter in law Jean and loving staff and friends by her side. I have unfortunately had to return to Auckland to maintain my radiation schedule and additional appointments .
One can never truely repay , acknowledge or thank your parents sufficiently for the time, years, effort and overall love that they selflessly gave to provide a future such as Keith and I have been given . Marjel and Bill have had positive influence on us a s a family. Their influence and foundations have stood not only their children but also their grandchildren in good stead these many years .
Tomorrow Marjel celebrates her 84th birthday settled back in her own room surrounded by her own familiar momentoes’ , memories and possessions . Her brother celebrates yet another
Wedding “ Anniversary” On the same day and we celebrate with her a life well lived . The future days and path are unclear but with the love , care and joy of our wider family across the world we walk alongside her in this challenging journey together.
